Persad-Tirone’s scholarship essay describes the student’s transformation from a burgeoning middle child to a high-achieving young adult. Persad-Tirone candidly discusses the obstacles that he overcame, from his desire to live beyond his older brother’s legacy to his struggles with football and its culture.
The Viles & Beckman Foundation couldn’t be prouder to offer its financial support to such a dedicated young man.
Finding His Value
Persad-Tirone’s scholarship essay goes into great detail about the trials and tribulations the young man has faced over the past several years. He candidly discusses his older brother’s talent as well as that brother’s spiral into drug use. Persad-Tirone elaborates on the pressure his older brother’s absence, and later death, put on him and the rest of his family.
His essay goes on to discuss Persad-Tirone’s academic and athletic challenges, faced alongside tension at home. Persad-Tirone speaks highly of the time he’s dedicated to his athletics but acknowledges challenges, too, both with the atmosphere cultivated in athletic spaces and the conflict between his athletics and academics.
Those challenges drove Persad-Tirone to take a year away from academics as he recentered himself on his goals. He reports using that year away from school to connect with the community in and around Hendry County, where he coached football. He found strength in teaching students how to hone their talents and balance athletics with their everyday lives.
God-Centered Growth
Persad-Tirone’s growth didn’t stop there. His scholarship essay highlights the rekindling of his faith courtesy of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes ministry and Mission 1:27. These community-oriented programs marry ministry and outreach, allowing Persad-Tirone to serve the people around him while nourishing his faith.

Taking Inspiration from the People Around Him
In his own words, Persad-Tirone found the inspiration he needed to pursue personal growth from his church as well as his family:
“My family is a great source of inspiration for me since they have taught me so much about life via their experiences in areas like parenting, education, and work ethics. The previous struggles of my family have also taught me how to enjoy my life to the fullest. They allow me to be a great brother, son, and future husband.”
Persad-Tirone specifically takes time to discuss his relationship with his nephew, Josiah.
“Josiah allows me to be a kid again,” Persad-Tirone says. “I have taken on the role of being his father figure since my brother passed. He pushes me in my faith [and] my patience, and [he] shows me what it means to keep a childlike faith. Since my brother’s passing, he has been such a pillar of strength for our family.
Jordan’s Academic Ambitions
Persad-Tirone currently studies Exercise Science at Kennesaw State University, where he specializes in strength and conditioning. He wants to encourage the people around him to utilize preventative measures to preserve their health. He also wants to spread the good word about the different ways healthy exercise can improve a person’s life.
Persad-Tirone is set to graduate in August 2024. He reports that he intends to use Marcus W. Viles’ scholarship funds to help pay his rent as he goes to school and commits to the Fellowship of Christin Athletes ministry full-time. He hopes that his passion and education can see him win a position in private athletics education.
