national blood shortage in a decade. The Red Cross supplies over 40% of the nation’s blood but has received a 10% decline in donations since the start of the pandemic. This decline is due to rising covid and flu cases, increased difficulties in organizing traditional blood drives, and a significant decrease in student donors whose donations have dropped 62% since the start of the pandemic.
Effects of The National Blood Shortage
This shortage has forced the Red Cross to limit its distributions to hospitals. Some hospitals are receiving as little as 1 in 4 blood products that they need. As a result of this shortage, doctors are forced to make harrowing decisions about which patients received blood transfusions. Patients in need are now forced to wait until the hospital has a supply of blood matching their blood type. Many patients worry that hospitals may not get a supply of blood matching their blood type in time to save their lives.
According to Dr. Pampee Young, Chief Medical Officer of the American Red Cross, this shortage has a specific effect on cancer patients, patients with blood disorders, and accident victims who need transfusions. We at Viles and Beckman have dedicated our lives to helping our clients through the most difficult times in their lives. On June 14, our law office in Fort Myers hosted a blood drive in partnership with the local blood bank, One Blood. We hosted one of One Blood’s mobile clinics at our office and opened a blood drive in our community to help those most in need. That day, we had 22 people donate, including members of our staff and members of our community. One donation can help save up to 3 lives. In one day, we were able to provide aid to save up to 66 lives in our community! Viles and Beckman are committed to continuing our efforts to help not only our own clients but our whole community when they need us most.
